Tento živočich s nezvyklým zjevem dorůstá délky až 91 cm, ale průměrná velikost je obvykle 40 cm. Obývá laguny a útesy do hloubky 50 m. Vyhledává místa s jeskyněmi a úkryty v útesech. Ježík je řazen mezi ryby, u nichž byla potvrzena jedovatost masa. Jed ježíka je svým účinkem podobný neurotoxinu čtverzubců (tetrodotoxin), ale příznaky otrav jsou většinou mírnější. Nicméně, zejména v Japonsku, patří čtverzubci k nejvyhledávanějším lahůdkám, prodávaných pod názvem "fugu". Maso při kuchání nesmí přijít do kontaktu s nejjedovatějšími částmi těla ryby – jikrami a játry.
This creature with an unusual appearance can grow up to 91 cm long, but the average size mostly observed is 40 cm. It inhabit lagoons and reefs to a depth of 50 m. It seeks out areas with caves and hiding spots in the reefs. The porcupinefish is classified among fish in which the toxicity of the flesh has been confirmed. The venom is similar in effect to the neurotoxin of tetraodontids (tetrodotoxin), but the symptoms of poisoning are usually milder. However, especially in Japan, tetraodontids are among the most sought-after delicacies, sold under the name 'fugu.' The flesh must not come into contact with the most poisonous parts of the fish's body – the eggs and liver – during preparation.
